Empire / Now that "Texting" is Back ...
Last post by tmj - March 19, 2012, 09:55:48 AM
Since "texting" on hand held devices are all the rage now.  Does this mean users can play Empire on a hand held device?  Does 'telnet' protocol even work on a hand held device?

(Or are the islands too big to display?)

Or is this thought too much like Floogle?

Hello, I'm currently having problems compiling the source code released here:

I have read the help file and included all the files it requires and it loads with no errors into vb6 but when trying to compile it with vb6 I get complie errors with code highlighted  "mydotnet as semivbdecompiler" and the error message "cannot find project or library"

can anyone please help me fix this?

thanks.

Last post by much_guest - November 16, 2008, 12:52:25 PM
Bruce Moreland from Evergreen State College circa 70s. (if you know Bruce, please see that he gets this msg)

I saw your post that you HAVE the source code, in hardcopy, for Evergreen's version of Civilization!

Please! Please! Contact me regarding recovering this gaming LOST TREASURE!

Wow... And Thanks Bruce! :)

I've already secured guarantees for a speedy data entry, have access to any needed hardware platforms, and look foward to seeing the oh so familiar interface.

I will also return the hardcopy to you with zero wear and tear.

Many folks have browsed Empire... But what they were REALLY looking for was Civilization!

I apologize for this approach... I simply can't get access to the MB were you posted your fabulous news. :(

I am much_guest@yahoo.com.

Let's get this done Bruce!

VB.net / Shocking isn't it?
Last post by golem - June 12, 2008, 05:46:03 PM

Sorry, not making fun of your problem... It's just the Microsoft way! ;)

What you are experiencing is what those MS pinheads consider normal.

Chances are you probably got ahold of some of the earlier VB.NET code and both the 2005 & 2008 IDEs will AUTOMATICALLY attempt to update the code to handle sweeping/significant changes in each environment.

The problem Valcansa, is that the 'upgrade Wizard' is the biggest POS ever concieved, was written by wannabe MS geniuses who never really used VB, it was AND STILL is a hatchet job that allows MS to claim they provided 'a tool' to 'facilitate' conversion between VB5/VB6/early VB.NET and the current version.

The bottom line, is you will want to go ahead and open the projects in your target IDE and tackle the conversion problems one by one.

A good place to start is to click (ctrl-click ;) ) on each of the warnings with the links for the 'exceptions'. You have about a 50-50 chance of getting help with that specific error. You will want to remain flexible in your thinking and exercise extreme patience... Cuz that is what it will take.

And TRUST ME, when I tell you the answers/fixes will often be counter-intuitive.

Another approach is to cut-n-paste the ID number into the search engine and it will take you to various .NET sites. I warn you that you are now down to 10-90 chance of getting any real help.

Most of the discussions will draw answers from guys that are supposed to be heavyweights, some with LOTS and LOTS of abbreviations like they are some kind of programming gods! saying things like "that's the old way" or my personal favorite... 'just rewrite the whole thing from scratch!'

The sad truth is they are mostly just gelding parrots who have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE WTF you are talking about!

(I slay myself ;) )

But IF you persever, you WILL get an answer.

I am one clever devil and even SOLVED the GET/PUT of UDTs (VB5/VB6), using some rather unorthodox thinking... Just win baby... Just WIN.

The new models are SERIOUSLY convoluted (they shot RAD at dawn on the first day of the 'conversion' from VB6 to .NET! :) ), the 'thread safe' is a gas.

Chances are we've see it. ;)

So Valcansa... Just ask. :)

VB.net / Upgrade wizard in Visual Studi...
Last post by valcansa - June 12, 2008, 03:04:12 AM
I'm attempting to learn how to write some game programs using Visual Studio 2005 and or Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition.  I have found VB code of games that I figured would assist me in learning how to write.  However, when I open the project file, it goes through the upgrade wizard and when it does it encounters significant error messages.  I'm wondering if it's something I'm doing incorrectly?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Empire / Proposed enhancements.
Last post by much_guest - April 23, 2008, 06:01:19 PM
Looking for feedback on new ideas.

The concepts will be discussed in this thread. And there are lots of new ideas that have been proposed. Please feel free to add your ideas or kick the merits of anything you encounter in this thread.

This is a NO FAULT thread, so feel free to bash the bad ideas like a pinata!

Here we go!

-----------------------------------------------

Tanks!

It's hopefully no secret that the originator of this version (Mr. Ben Norton) seems to have wanted to lock in on the circa WWII timeframe.  Just one question... Where are the TANKS?

Obviously, Artillery was supposed to fill in part of the void, but how can you have a WWII wargame w/o TANKS?

This would be a REALLY easy enhancement (For some people ;) ) to just drop in.

What do YOU think?

-------------------------------

Rusting ships?

Let's be honest. The reason that RUST has such a voracious appetite when it comes to ships is PURELY for housekeeping purposes. Trying to keep the clutter of PTs down to a manageable level.

It seems like it would make a lot more sense for instead of ships just stopping dead in the water when they run out of ore... that they would do something like DRIFT on ocean currents until they run aground of an island, and then maybe start rusting? It's kind of hideous losing those brave sailors when a PT just rusts out from under their feet (especially in a 'fast' game).

So the change would be to introduce ocean currents that would affect ships that have lost power (and do something about the rust rate?). Ships would tend to drift into nearby isles (direction selected by picking a random nearby island? :) ). Naturally, slowing the rust rate down (maybe not even starting it till it runs aground?)

Naturally, if your ships runs aground on a regular sector, it will be beached... But if it's a mountain, well you broke up on the rocks!

--------------

Bridges?

I don't know about you, but I really hate those isolated island pieces. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to convert those inland sectors into bridges? They would behave mostly like waterways.

Does anyone know what the missing sector types are? (Based on the DESIGNATION_CONST gaps?)

Bugs / Run time error
Last post by cnagent - March 02, 2008, 09:51:49 AM
I just purchased Semi VB Decompiler and when I attempt to open my .exe file to decompile it, I get

Run-time error 429
ActiveX componet can't create object

I have decompiled this file through an online decompiler before so I'm not sure what the issue is.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank You
