VB.net / Shocking isn't it?
June 12, 2008, 05:46:03 PM

Sorry, not making fun of your problem... It's just the Microsoft way! ;)

What you are experiencing is what those MS pinheads consider normal.

Chances are you probably got ahold of some of the earlier VB.NET code and both the 2005 & 2008 IDEs will AUTOMATICALLY attempt to update the code to handle sweeping/significant changes in each environment.

The problem Valcansa, is that the 'upgrade Wizard' is the biggest POS ever concieved, was written by wannabe MS geniuses who never really used VB, it was AND STILL is a hatchet job that allows MS to claim they provided 'a tool' to 'facilitate' conversion between VB5/VB6/early VB.NET and the current version.

The bottom line, is you will want to go ahead and open the projects in your target IDE and tackle the conversion problems one by one.

A good place to start is to click (ctrl-click ;) ) on each of the warnings with the links for the 'exceptions'. You have about a 50-50 chance of getting help with that specific error. You will want to remain flexible in your thinking and exercise extreme patience... Cuz that is what it will take.

And TRUST ME, when I tell you the answers/fixes will often be counter-intuitive.

Another approach is to cut-n-paste the ID number into the search engine and it will take you to various .NET sites. I warn you that you are now down to 10-90 chance of getting any real help.

Most of the discussions will draw answers from guys that are supposed to be heavyweights, some with LOTS and LOTS of abbreviations like they are some kind of programming gods! saying things like "that's the old way" or my personal favorite... 'just rewrite the whole thing from scratch!'

The sad truth is they are mostly just gelding parrots who have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE WTF you are talking about!

(I slay myself ;) )

But IF you persever, you WILL get an answer.

I am one clever devil and even SOLVED the GET/PUT of UDTs (VB5/VB6), using some rather unorthodox thinking... Just win baby... Just WIN.

The new models are SERIOUSLY convoluted (they shot RAD at dawn on the first day of the 'conversion' from VB6 to .NET! :) ), the 'thread safe' is a gas.

Chances are we've see it. ;)

So Valcansa... Just ask. :)

Visual Basic (5/6) / Hey Corey. :)
June 14, 2005, 11:23:13 AM
I don't quite understand what you mean by ' collision stays the same as the previous map'. Are you implying that it is displaying incorrectly (or the more likely you are not displaying the updated form based on actions on Form3).

If it is the latter, you are probably dealing you 'draw the image' routine is only being tripped by the form_load event. So when the form is first displayed, it works ok, but upon returning to the original form (which WILL NOT trip the form_load event) the change is not being reflected, (it would be in the same condition you left it in).

From a conceptual point of view you might want to think of it as follows:
 1) Your 'draw the image' routine needs to be a central routine.
 2) Your 'draw the image' decides what to render based on a shared data structure.
 3) You invoke that routine on form_load (already works. :) ), but you need to add other trigger events such as _resize, _gotfocus, etc. to suit as needed based on user  input.

Let me know if that helps. :)

General Chat / You know...

It would be unfortunate, if they are in fact gone. Thinking along the lines of that type of MB is more of a community, than an accumulation of info...

On the other hand, it might be nice to actually get it right. With regards to decompiling their 'work product'... was B- type of work. ;)

I keep hinting. You think it would bother them... Or BE A CLUE that source code recovery is not occurring. ;)

Is VB-Decompiler gone (again)? Or just having DNS problems? Anyone have any idea? :)

General Chat / 7 Degrees of Separation...
April 26, 2005, 11:22:27 AM
Hey VBGamer. :)

I have a friend (a couple of degrees of separation away) that runs this huge game server (hp3000.empireclassic.com :)  ) on some spare corporate mainframe. They used to have a forum for their game and all of the various game playing/GUI layer programs that are used to play the game.

My question is would you be willing to let them have a subforum for their game and what sounds like interesting game playing tools (written in Java, VB, and I think .Net ;) ) in your Games grouping?

I'm sure it wouldn't be any extra work for you (after the initial setup ;) ).  I would guess he only needs subforum moderator type access(?)...

Anyhow, they're really nice guys and were asking around,  etc. etc. Can you help these fellow game playing freaks? :)

Java / Don't sweat it...
April 17, 2005, 12:13:04 PM
Being a  stone cold genius the way I am, it only took me to the fourth day to understand exactly how stupid Java really is...

Or how insanely bad the Sun 'tutorials' are...

How inanely primitive the 'tools' are...

to get a real program off of the ground!

It is rather hilarious, there was a guy who had supposedly been a developer for 15 years on a WinBlows platform, was trying to get the exact same tutorial to work, dutifully typing in the sample project exactly like the tutorial said to, experiencing exactly the same errors. The tutorial was written in 2001!

doesn't work any better now than then.

It all became crystal clear the moment I finally understand that they had some *nix geek didn't have much clue how to set up a workable pathway environment ('classpath' ;) ) in WinXX
land.

Eureka! Was able to chuck the tutorial and actually got this abandon ware to work.

Now I'm on to do the 1.2,1.4>1.5/5 implementation difference tango...

Anyhow, don't sweat it, got it... :)

No explanation really needed as to why you went commercial...

I more than understand.

> take the code and resell
It goes way beyond that. They almost come off like you somehow owe it/something to them.

>That's it for now I am really tired.
Sure the path ahead is a sheer cliff... But so is the real fun. ;)

Is that your semi-decompiler? :)

Looks good. I really frown on making money on that sort of thing... Apparently I only frown on you 1/5 as much as I do Serge.

Looks like you're smoking Serge! Too bad you weren't around back when I was really in VB5/6 mode... The 'sample code' was a filter, designed to separate the wheat from the chaff. All we ever had at the various decompiler mbs were chaff and poseurs. ;)

Would have ported VB to Linux with ease. ;)

Java / Anybody Java?
April 15, 2005, 09:48:39 AM
Can anyone here help out a Java newb? This is my third day of working with it... and I STILL haven't mastered it! :(

My questions are more across the board, overview, generic, WTFDTM (  ) type?

Have any idea what has happened to VB-Decompiler?

I can seriously relate to the idea of being busy...

Maybe MrU likes the new look...

Is this your site Vbgamer45? Is it ok to talk in the open (I kind of like that IYKWIM ;) )?
